Starcraft to Scale (old) by xiaorobear Starcraft to Scale (old) by xiaorobear
2015 edit: A revised version of this chart, with official, Blizzard-approved sizes that appeared in the StarCraft 2 Field Manual, can be found here.

Edit: Well, this is over a year old now. Here's a newer version with just the terran units, at a much more manageable filesize and with a few new faces, check it out. There are links in there to updated versions of the Zerg and Protoss charts as well!

(Basically) all of the units in Starcraft, to scale. As of Heart of the Swarm. The capital ships chart (including the Leviathan!) can be viewed here: xiaorobear.deviantart.com/art/…

Downloading the full size is a must! (Be warned, it's a 10MB image!)

There will be a complete Legacy of the Void overhaul, correcting inaccuracies and including a few more obscure units as well (cerebrates, drop pods, preservers, etc.), but, we'll all have to wait for Blizzard to finish the expansion first!

This is actually a very old version of the chart, with some outdated artwork. A new, Blizzard-approved version will be coming out with the Starcraft Field Manual in the Fall!

This is absolutely amazing, wonderfully done!  It'd be great if this was included with the game somehow, just as "by-the-way" reference material.  In other words, you should get Blizzard to pay you for it, you deserve it!  lol

Thanks so much! What I'd really like is if they just released their own chart, using the models they had in the cinematics. The work's already done on those!

Man. with the protoss shuttle that size, it's ridiculuous in starcraft one that it can only fit just four zealots inside. Rage

Adding cerebrates? That'll be a challenge, seeing how there's next to no information about their size or their appearance outside of game sprites.

It'll definitely be a guess. The only source I know of is a vague description of Zasz from the Starcraft: Queen of Blades novel, but it won't really be any worse of a guess than a unit like the Brutalisk, or the Void Ray, which are also based on practically nothing.

Are you going to add the Overmind? I'm interested to hear your estimate about its size.

I will, but the size is going to be a huge huge guess. Should be a cool drawing, though.

From what I've seen in the UED cinematic, the Overmind is at least the size of your mothership.

I agree! Though technically that's the 2nd Overmind, and we have no way of knowing if the two were the same size or not, but, whatever. It's not like there's going to be any new information being released on him.

I think the 2 Overminds have different size, because the 2nd hae only a few months of life, the 1st have a lot of millennia, in SC1 too we can see the model used is different (for the first was used the armored, for the second the normal)

Amazing! I love the way you do your concepts.. you mix the in game units with the official cinematics, the original concepts and even more amazing: the brood war in game models and concepts... Really impressive

THIS IS AMAZING!!! :star:

It's especially great to see just how big the transport units square with their respective cargo. It cracks me up to no end how you can land four Vikings, load them inside a Medivac, and drop them on the enemy (the SC2 commentator Day9 calls that "the ultimate mind game") :XD: Of course it's made all the more amusing that the Medivac can only hold two Hellbats. *cough*

The Colossus is absolutely stunning once in scale, especially! (albeit sad, considering it's the only unit in the game- minus the Viking's transformation- that every other unit can theoretically kill, even Zerglings ^^; I guess that kind of fragility is the price Protoss paid for relying on those ancient walkers.)

Anyway~ terrific, terrific work! The overall technique you used reminds me a lot of Capcom's official height chart for Monster Hunter, especially w/ the Zerg units... ;)

God... This is the type of work I love to see...
Your artwork is amazing (much better than the original by Blizzard), you managed to maintain that "Brood War style" in the drawing, and that is what makes it look so good (I much rather like the old-style artwork of StarCraft 1 than the new artwork)

You are doing a work that will be remembered for all StarCraft fans all over the world!

I just want to ask... what were your sources? Did you read or look some artbook?
Did you use original artwork or you just invented the way some units look, based on the game sprites? (Like the Scout, that looks awesome)

Well, thank you for give us a close up to the StarCraft universe that not even Blizzard did

First off, thank you, thanks very much.
Source-wise, my main authority was always the pre-rendered cinematic cutscenes; I regarded those as the truest representation of scale (although they, especially the SC1 ones, still contradict each other a lot). Starcraft: Ghost material was also very useful, especially for units like the lurker. For something like the science vessel (not pictured here, but it's in the bigger chart), you can at least make an educated guess based on things like windows. But then for some units there isn't even concept art to go on, the Raven, for example, so the sizes of just a few are complete guesses. Others have a specific, stated size by Blizzard, though sadly very few. How big is an observer? I think the size up there is reasonable, but that's all.

As for the looks of the units themselves, well, it was a really long project, and I went through phases. The Valkyrie, like a few other units, is incredibly faithful to the original SCBW sprite. I made some rough 3D models for a few of the ships to verify their proportions, and, yup, that's a Valkyrie:

But sometimes I was also really faithful to the SC2 designs. The scout you liked, in particular, that is straight up a drawing of SC2's scout model. And it was one of the first ones, so the drawing is actually kind of messy and bad. The goliath is definitely a SC2 goliath, very different from the SCG and SC1 designs, the thor is just a drawing of the in-game thor model.

But, sometimes I mixed and matched. The SCV, for example; a lot of elements are based on SC2, but the feet are straight out of a SCG design. Same for the overlord, it mixes a SCG body with some SC2 elements and the face of the original BW portrait. The lurker takes influences from all the games (though I included the impaler for straight SC2).

Sometimes I just drew my own thing. Like, I know what a high templar is supposed to look like, so I just sat down and drew one. The details of things like the Hatchery are similarly invented: I'm proud of the Nexus; I basically tried to take the SC1 design and bring it more in line with SC2 protoss design principles, and I think it went really well.

And then, months and months later, I'd done over a hundred, heh.

Anyway, thanks for your comment, and I'll hope you check back for the finished HotS capital ship chart, though I still don't know when I'll be releasing it.

Heh, a really long time. I've been working on it on and off, adding a unit or two in my spare time, but now I've drawn over a hundred (not all are pictured here), so it adds up. I started over a year ago, but there were lots and lots of breaks in between, and months set aside while I waited for HotS to come out. Thanks!
